Description

Practical Nursing program is a 1404-hour curriculum 52-week 12 credits designed to provide graduates with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities needed to practice safely and effectively as an entry level graduate nurse with the eligibility to take the NCLEX-PN licensure exam. This program is available in two formats: A daytime program consisting of two semesters and an evening program consisting of three semesters and a summer session.

Forty students are admitted to the daytime program twice a year in June and December. Instructional hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00am – 3:00 pm; clinical times may vary from 6:45am to 7:15pm (Monday-Sunday). Forty students are admitted to the evening program every year. Evening classes are conducted Monday through Friday from 5:00 – 9:00 pm; with some Saturday and Sunday clinical hours varying from 6:45am to 7:15pm. Times for all class and/or clinical sessions are subject to change.

Assessment Plan

Assessment is an integral part of the educational process at Sharron Nursing Academy, accurate feedback is an important tool in continuously improving the institution’s nursing programs. Students can expect to participate in assessment activities prior to entry into programs, within specific courses and following program completion for specific fields of study.

Program Outcomes

  • Provide nursing care within the scope of the ethical and legal responsibilities of practical nursing.
  • Utilize the nursing process to identify basic needs of the client throughout the lifespan for health promotion and maintenance, or when biological, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial needs are not being met.
  • Provide safe and skillful therapeutic care in simple nursing situations based on knowledge of biological, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial needs of the client throughout the life span.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with the client, the client’s family, and members of the inter-disciplinary health care team.

Program Course Descriptions

PRN0070 Nutrition (25 Hours)

The student will identify, describe, and discuss the various nutrients essential to promoting growth and maintenance of the human body. The clinical aspects of nutrition are explored through various therapeutic diets as well as through introductory nutritional assessment skills.

PRN0020 Human Development (25 Hours)

The course provides an introduction to physical, cognitive, emotional and social aspects of human development throughout the life span. It emphasizes developmental processes beginning with conception and continuing throughout childhood, adolescence, adulthood, later life and death. The course focuses on developmental processes, cultural influences and other factors that make each individual unique. This course takes an interdisciplinary approach toward human development that is based on science and applied toward the goal of solving important human problems.

PRN0080 Anatomy and Physiology (45 Hours)

A lecture course designed to introduce the student to the structure and function of the following body systems: skeletal, muscular, nervous, sensory, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and urinary systems. This class offers information concerning normal human structures and functions and the developmental changes that occur during an individual’s life span. Students will learn specific information about factors associated with expected and abnormal anatomical and physiological changes associated with the body’s major organ systems. This course is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in a health occupation.

PRN0081 Anatomy and Physiology Lab (45 Hours)

Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory provides opportunities to observe various anatomical parts and to investigate physiological phenomena. The student will relate specimens, models, microscope slides, and the whole body to information learned in lecture and read about in the textbook.

PRN0098 Foundations of Nursing (65 Hours)

The course utilizes the nursing standards of practice based on principles of biology, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural to meet the needs of clients throughout the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on basic nursing skills, patient safety and therapeutic communication. Concepts and skills are enhanced in subsequent courses.

PRN0099 Foundations of Nursing Clinical (147 Hours)

The course explores the art and science of nursing in this clinical course. Emphasis is placed on the nursing process, cultural and spiritual awareness, communication, data collection, performance of basic nursing skills, and documentation. Principles of safe medication administration are introduced.

PRN0030 Pharmacology I (50 Hours)

The course introduces the principles of pharmacology, drug calculations, and the effects of selected medications on the human body. The nursing process is used as the framework for ensuring safe and effective nursing care for clients across the lifespan.

PRN0031 Pharmacology II (25 Hours)

The course introduces the principles of pharmacology, drug calculations, and the effects of selected medications on the human body. The nursing process is used as the framework for ensuring safe and effective nursing care for clients across the lifespan

PRN0290 Medical Surgical Nursing I (75 Hours)

The course focuses on the effect of disorders of selected systems throughout the lifespan and applies the nursing process in meeting basic needs. Health promotion and maintenance, rehabilitation, and continuity of care are emphasized. The role of the practical nurse is incorporated throughout.

PRN0290L Medical Surgical Nursing I Clinical (155 Hours)

Simulated and actual care situation of selected systems throughout the life span, utilizing acute and long-term care settings. An emphasis is placed on critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills.

PRN0291 Medical Surgical Nursing II (180 Hours)

The course focuses on the effect of disorders of selected systems throughout the lifespan using the nursing process in meeting basic needs. Prevention, rehabilitation and continuity of care are emphasized. The role of the practical nurse is incorporated throughout.

PRN0291L Medical Surgical Nursing II Clinical (195 Hours)

The clinical provides simulated and actual care situations of selected systems throughout the lifespan, utilizing acute and long-term care settings. An emphasis is placed on critical thinking and clinical decision-making skill development. Principles of leadership for the practical nurse will be implemented, as well as multi-task management skills for transition as a practical nurse.

PRN0500 Gerontology (70 Hours)

The course is designed to explore issues related to the aging adult using the nursing process as the organizing framework. Also discussed are the impact of ageism, alterations in physiological and psycho-social functioning, and the role of the practical nurse in caring for older adult clients.

PRN0500L Gerontology Clinical (50 Hours)

The course is designed to use skills related to taking care of aging adult using the nursing process as the organizing framework. Also discussed are the impact of ageism, alterations in physiological and psycho-social functioning, and the role of the practical nurse in caring for older adult clients.

PRN0690 Informatics Essentials (25 Hours)

The course is the first in a sequence of practical nursing courses and is designed as an introduction to the many facets of the college experience. Emphasis is placed on factors affecting student success. This includes orientation to the academic arena, study skills, computer proficiency, skills procedures, and basic mathematic skills. Medical terminology will also be reviewed for proficiency. Concepts and skills learned in this class will be enhanced in subsequent courses.

PRN0109 Mental Health (50 Hours)

The course explores basic concepts and trends in mental health nursing. Therapeutic modalities and client behavior management are discussed. Emphasis is placed on using the nursing process and meeting the basic human needs of the mental health client.

PRN0100 Maternal Child Nursing (60 Hours)

The course focuses on pre- and post-natal maternal nursing care, as well as the care of children from infancy to adolescence. Emphasis is given to normal reproduction and frequently occurring biological, cultural, spiritual and psychosocial needs of the child-bearing and childrearing family.

PRN0100L Maternal Child Nursing Clinical (25 Hours)

The clinical applies concepts from Maternal Child I. Emphasis is placed on the nursing process and meeting the basic needs of the maternal child client.

PRN0110 Pediatric (60 Hours)

The clinical applies concepts from Pediatric Nursing. Emphasis is placed on the nursing process and meeting the basic needs of children of all ages, from infancy through teen years.

PRN0110L Pediatric Clinical (25 Hours)

The clinical applies skill concepts from Pediatric Nursing. Emphasis is placed on the nursing process using skills and knowledge to meet the basic needs of children of all ages, from infancy through teen years.

PRN0670 PN Role Development (25 Hours)

The course includes expansion of the leadership and management skills necessary for personal and career growth and development, emphasizing assignments delegation, and conflict management. This course also provides an opportunity to acquire additional knowledge in areas of concern and to build on areas of strength to improve the chances of being successful in the NCLEX-PN.

PRN0680L PN Role Development Clinical (25 Hours)

The course applies the continued concepts of leadership and management skills necessary for personal and career growth and development, emphasizing assignments delegation, and conflict management. Importance is placed on critical thinking and clinical decisions making. The student applies knowledge and understanding of content gained in all previous and concurrent didactic and clinical courses in various clinical environments.

HSC1531 Medical Terminology (30 Hours)

The course is designed to learn the language used to describe components of processes of the human body, medical procedures, diseases, disorders, and pharmacology.

PRN1600 NCLEX Review (25 Hours)

The course is designed to prepare you for the NCLEX PN exam to determine if you are ready to begin practicing as an entry-level practical or vocational nurse.

PRN1601 NCLEX Review II (25 Hours)

The course is designed to continue to prepare you for the NCLEX PN exam to determine if you meet the entry-level education needed to begin practicing as a practical nurse.

MAT1030 Intermediate Algebra (4 Hours)

The course is designed to move you beyond basic math and prepares you for statistics and analyzing data information.

ENG1101 English Composition (4 Credits)

The course is designed to explore issues related to an essential tool in literacy, education and communication, it allows you to covey ideas, feeling, emotions, opinions and political views with many forms of communication.

HSC0003 Basic Healthcare Worker (90 Hours – 4 Credits)

The course is designed to explore issues related to basic work as a healthcare assistant and emphasis is placed on the nursing process, cultural and spiritual awareness, communication, data collection, performance of basic healthcare skills, and documentation. Principles of basic nursing skills are introduced.
